MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (Acsr), Kenetswe Mosenogi, has congratulated all the winners honoured at the North West Sports Awards held last Saturday at Sun City. She further wished them luck with their entries into the South African Sports Awards to be held later in the year. Orlando Pirates star, Mannapule Saleng, who hails from Bloemhof, bagged Sports Star of The Year Award at the award ceremony. The footballer, who rushed to Sun City after the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs, complimented Junior Masangane (Mmabana Gymnastics) and Tshiamo Matlhoane (NW Gymnastics), who competed alongside him in the same category. Saleng said that no words could adequately express how grateful he was to be recognized for his outstanding on-field performance. ”

The 16-category-awards and special awards seek to recognise, celebrate and reward exellence in various sporting codes from local, provincial and international spheres. Nthabiseng Nini, who played for Team SA at ICC U19 Women’s Cricket World Cup, dropped tears of joy as she was receiving the Young Athlete of the Year award. 2022 Comrade Marathon winner, Tete Dijana bagged the Premier Award and veteran Sports broadcaster and author of The Politics Of South African Football, Oshebeng Alpheus Koonyaditse was honoured with an Exellecent Award. Addressing athletes, guests and sports practitioners, MEC Mosegoni said: “Sport plays a vital role and can be turned into a profession these days. It is good to witness that our very own athletes do not only represent their home towns, province but also represent the country in various sporting codes.”
